When people see this huge blade, they know Guan Yu is coming.
在小说《三国演义》里，关羽的兵器是一把巨大的长刀 - 青龙偃月刀。"青龙"说的是刀上的龙纹，"偃月"说的是刀头像一弯月亮。小说里还给它配了一个夸张的重量：八十二斤。换成今天的单位，大约四十多公斤。你抱一袋这么重的大米都够呛，更别说上战场挥舞如飞了。
可就是这样一把刀，后来和关羽绑得特别紧。戏曲舞台上，你只要看见一把长柄大弯刀，差不多就知道关公要出场了。很多关帝庙里也会供着这样的刀，人们相信它能镇宅辟邪。它未必真是关羽手里的原物，却已经深深刻进了中国文化的想象里。
In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Yu carries a huge weapon called the Green Dragon Crescent Blade.
"Green Dragon" points to the dragon design on the blade. "Crescent" means the blade curves like a thin moon. The novel even gives it a wild weight: 82 jin. In today's units, that is more than 90 pounds.
Try holding a bag of rice that heavy. Now imagine swinging it around on a battlefield.
Still, this blade became very closely tied to Guan Yu. On the opera stage, if you see a giant curved blade on a long handle, you can almost guess that Lord Guan is about to walk on.
Many Temples where people honor Guan Yu as Lord Guan. also show this kind of blade. Some people believe it can protect a home and push bad things away. It may not be the real weapon Guan Yu held in history, but it became very real in Chinese imagination.

The history book says Guan Yu struck down Yan Liang with a thrust, which sounds more like a spear or halberd.
正史《三国志》记载了一次关羽杀敌的场面 - 他骑马冲进敌阵，刺死了敌军主将颜良。"刺"这个字就是全部。长刀是"砍"的，长矛、长戟是"刺"的。关羽用来刺死颜良的器械，很可能是一把长矛或长戟，而不是一把大砍刀。

It says Guan Yu rode straight into the enemy army and struck down Yan Liang with a thrust. That word matters.
A huge curved blade is mostly for chopping. A spear or A long weapon with a spear point and a blade on it. is better for thrusting. So this line makes many people think Guan Yu was probably using something more like a spear or halberd, not the giant curved blade people picture today.
Old objects found by archaeologists give another clue. From Guan Yu's time, people have found weapons such as spears, halberds, short blades, and ring-handled sabers. But they have not found a huge curved pole blade exactly like the Green Dragon Crescent Blade in the novel.
Blades with a similar shape became more common much later. Many scholars think this kind of big pole blade became more developed after the A time in China about 1,000 years ago.. So Guan Yu probably did not use this exact weapon in real life.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, many heroes have weapons you can picture right away. Guan Yu is written as a brave and mighty general, so the story puts a mighty blade in his hands.
The novel made that picture stick. Later, painters showed Guan Yu with the blade. Opera actors carried it on stage. Temples placed it beside him.
After many years, people did not always ask first, "Did he really use that exact weapon?" They saw the blade and thought, "Guan Yu."

Maybe "Real" Is Not the Only Question
It may not be the real battlefield weapon, but it became a real cultural symbol.
