Two Mountains Block the Way
Two huge mountains stand in front of the home, forcing everyone to take the long way around.
很久以前，有一个老人叫愚公。
故事里，他家门口正对着两座很大的山。
每次出门，家里人都要绕很远很远的路，所以大家都觉得特别不方便。
有一天，愚公说：“我们把这两座山挖走吧。”
Long ago, there was an old man named Yu Gong.
In the story, two huge mountains stood right in front of his home.
Every time his family wanted to go out, they had to walk a very long way around, and everyone found it troublesome.
One day, Yu Gong said, "Let us dig these mountains away."

全家一起挖山
The Whole Family Starts Digging
Yu Gong truly leads his family to dig at the mountain one stroke at a time.
第二天，愚公真的带着家里人开始挖山。
一锄头下去，挖出来的土很少很少，可他们还是一趟一趟地把土搬走。
一天又一天，一年又一年，他们一直没有停下。
旁边的人看着，都觉得这件事太难了。
The very next day, Yu Gong really led his family out to start digging.
Each swing of the hoe moved only a little earth, but they still carried it away basket by basket.
Day after day and year after year, they kept going.
People nearby watched and thought the job was far too hard.

聪明人的嘲笑
The Wise Man Laughs
The Wise Old Man laughs at him, but Yu Gong calmly explains his thinking.
有一个老人叫智叟，他觉得愚公太傻了。
他说：“你都这么老了，怎么可能把大山挖平呢？”
愚公回答说：“我挖不完，还有儿子。儿子挖不完，还有孙子。可山不会自己变得更高。”
这句话后来成了故事里最有名的一部分。
Another old man, called the Wise Old Man, thought Yu Gong was foolish.
He said, "You are already so old. How could you ever dig down these mountains?"
Yu Gong answered, "If I cannot finish, my sons will continue. If they cannot finish, my grandsons will continue. But the mountains will not keep growing higher."
That answer became the most famous part of the story.

路终于通了
At Last, the Road Is Open
In the end of the story, the mountains are carried away and the road finally opens.
后来，故事里说天帝被愚公打动了。
于是天帝派大力神把山搬走，愚公家门前的路终于通了。
这个故事当然不是历史纪录，它更像一个寓言。
它最想让人记住的，是那种不肯退后的劲。
Later, the story says that the Lord of Heaven was moved by Yu Gong's determination.
So he sent mighty spirits to carry the mountains away, and at last the road in front of Yu Gong's home was open.
Of course, this is not a history record. It is more like a fable.
What it wants people to remember most is the strength that refuses to give up.
一点一点，也能做到
Little by Little, It Can Be Done
《愚公移山》讲的不是谁力气最大。
它讲的是：事情再难，只要一直做下去，也会慢慢变少、慢慢靠近完成。
Yu Gong Moves the Mountains is not really about who is strongest.
It is about this: even a very hard job can grow smaller if people keep working at it little by little.
