What Happens When the Same Ink Touches Two Papers?

This is a modern illustration of an ink experiment, not a photograph of an old studio. Its row of shades helps us compare dark and light ink, but it is not the one correct chart for “five colors of ink.”

Gather two small pieces of ordinary practice paper, a watercolor brush, clean water, and washable black paint made for children. Ask an adult to protect the table. Lightly dampen one paper and leave the other dry, then place one matching drop of pale “ink” on each. Do not flick the brush, and never test this on calligraphy, old paper, artwork, unknown ink, or mineral pigments.

The drop on dry paper may keep a clearer edge. On damp paper, it may travel with the water and grow a soft, feathery ring. Some papers drink up liquid quickly, making ink spread at once. Other papers are treated with sizing, so water and ink stay closer to the surface. An artist can then build fine lines and color more slowly. Even xuan paper comes in more absorbent and more heavily sized forms, while silk needs its own preparation. The surface is not a silent background. It takes part in the painting.

When the spots dry, compare their centers and edges. The drop did not turn itself into a mountain or cloud, but it already offered several choices: sharp or blurry, scratchy or moist, heavy or thin. Painters can use those choices to make rock feel hard, mist feel damp, or a far mountain seem to slip back into the air.

“Five Colors of Ink” Does Not Mean Five Different Paints

The Tang-dynasty art historian Zhang Yanyuan wrote that skillful use of ink could bring forth “all five colors.” Later readers often shortened the idea to “five colors of ink”: changes in darkness, wetness, dryness, and layering can create many effects. But people have not always agreed on one list of five. One list says burnt, dark, heavy, pale, and clear. Another says dark, pale, dry, wet, and black. It is better understood as a reminder that ink has rich possibilities - not a scientific chart requiring exactly five bowls.

Dark ink does not always mean “near,” and pale ink does not automatically mean “far.” Painters also arrange size, overlap, line, position, and open space. Something nearby may be pale, while a dark tree may appear in the distance. You have to see how the whole picture works. Ink effects come from choices working together, not from one code in which dark always equals close.

Nor does ink painting mean that Chinese painters “did not use color.” Many Chinese paintings were made with ink and color on paper or silk. Mineral colors, plant-based colors, and later imported pigments all entered artists’ palettes. Blue-and-green landscapes, figure paintings, flowers and birds, temple murals, and popular paintings could be brilliant with color. Even a mostly ink painting might include pale blue, warm brown, or red. Ink can do a great deal when color is limited, but color never disappeared from Chinese painting.

Not One Secret Recipe, but a Whole Toolbox

This untitled landscape is a modern generated image in an ink-painting style, not an old painting, copy, or real scroll. It can help us notice dark and pale ink, texture strokes, and mist effects, but it is not evidence of any historical artist’s technique.

Why can a mountain surface look rough, cracked, or covered with plants? Painters often add strokes with different directions and rhythms inside its outlines. This broad family of methods is called cun, or texture strokes. A texture stroke is not a standard stamp that nature puts on every mountain, and it was not one pattern invented overnight by a single master. Artists in different places and periods developed many kinds, then changed them as they studied older work.

Ink can also be built in layers, a method called accumulated ink. Dark and pale ink can be added while another layer is still damp, breaking into each other in a method called broken ink. Larger flows and washes may be used to let forms appear through splashed ink. The names sound like separate drawers, but artists can combine the methods. Meanings have also shifted over time. Artists today keep experimenting with huge sheets, spraying, folding, printing, and other media.

A child’s ink observation does not need to pretend that it copies a masterpiece. Let one brushstroke cross dry paper and another cross damp paper. After they dry, add one more layer and record what happens to the edges. This helps you understand materials, but it cannot prove that an old painting was made in exactly the same way. Studying a real work also requires attention to its paper or silk, pigments, brush marks, mounting, inscriptions, ownership history, and scientific tests.

A Painted Path Can Let Your Eyes Travel

Some handscrolls were not meant to be opened all at once. They rested on a table and were unrolled from right to left, one section at a time. As an earlier section disappeared, the next came into view. Looking became a journey along a river or mountain path. A painter might let you look down on roofs, face a bridge straight ahead, and then gaze upward toward a peak. Several viewpoints could become parts of one continuous trip.

This way of building space is often called shifting or moving perspective. It is not a mistake caused by “failing” to understand Western one-point perspective. It is a choice suited to scrolls, stories, and the experience of traveling through a landscape. Pale distance, overlap, and changes in size can also create depth. Chinese painters also met, used, and reshaped other systems of perspective, especially during periods of strong cultural exchange.

But not every Chinese painting uses a moving viewpoint. A small album leaf, a front-facing portrait, a wall mural, and a handscroll dozens of feet long are not viewed in the same way. Instead of memorizing “the East does this and the West does that,” first ask what kind of object you are seeing, who was meant to see it, how it was opened, and where the painter wants your eye to pause.

Introductions to ink painting often give the biggest role to the literati, or scholar-painter, tradition. Scholar-painters valued brushwork related to calligraphy, exchanges of poetry, and personal expression. Their influence was enormous, but they were not all of Chinese painting. Artists in court academies made finely detailed works for rulers. Urban professionals painted for paying clients. Artists in temples, workshops, and local communities made murals, sacred images, New Year prints, and useful designs. These groups competed, but they also learned from, worked with, and depended on one another.

The Tang poet Wang Wei was later placed at the beginning of a history centered on literati ink landscape, and he has even been praised as a founder of ink painting. Old texts do say that he painted, and the subject of his Wangchuan estate influenced artists for centuries. But his original Wangchuan Villa does not survive. What remains are later copies, rubbings, and works “after Wang Wei.” Calling him an “ancestor of ink landscape” shows the place later writers gave him in their story. It is not an inventor’s certificate proved by a surviving original.

Even an artist’s name on an old painting may not be the final answer. Assistants may have helped. The work may copy an older model, or it may have been retitled, cut, remounted, or wrongly credited to a famous master. When a museum says “attributed to,” “after,” or “bearing the name of” an artist, it is showing us the limit of the evidence. Copying was not always forgery. In many periods, it was an important way to learn, preserve a composition, and speak with artists from the past.

Blank Silk May Become a River - or Remain Simply Blank

This is a modern generated ink-style image, not a copy of Fishing Alone on a Cold River. It uses a small boat, pale mountains, and a wide light area to suggest water, but it is not a detail from a Song painting.

Look at the small boat in the picture. Waves do not fill the space around it, yet your eye reads the pale area as wide water. That is one job blank space can do. An open area works with the boat, shoreline, poem, and other marks, suggesting water, mist, sky, distance, or quiet. Blank space is not simply “the part the artist forgot,” but neither does every empty inch hide a mystical lesson. Sometimes it is breathing room in the design, an untouched surface, or even the result of later cutting and damage.

One painting often used to explain blank space is Fishing Alone on a Cold River. The Tokyo National Museum labels it “attributed to Ma Yuan.” In other words, tradition connects it with Ma Yuan, but the artist’s identity is not completely secure. The museum also notes a join in the silk above the boat and says the work may once have been part of a larger picture. Its open space does make the boat and fisher stand out brilliantly. Yet the words “attributed to” and the joined silk remind us that enjoying an effect and asking about an object’s history can happen at the same time.

Ink art did not stop in the past. Since the 1900s, artists have brought brush-and-ink traditions together with sketching from life, abstraction, photography, installation, video, and new paints and tools. Some still work on paper. Others turn “ink” into an idea about flow, marks, and memory. Return to our opening drop: its greatest power is not following an ancient answer sheet. It is the new possibilities that keep appearing between material, hand, time, and the act of looking.

小结

In Summary

One drop of ink can leave edges that are sharp or soft, marks that are dry or wet, and layers that are heavy or transparent. Painters organize those effects with lines, texture strokes, layering, position, overlap, color, and open space. Only then do distance and weather appear. “Five colors of ink” celebrates variety. It does not mean that Chinese painting is only black and white, or that every artist follows one unchanging five-step recipe.

The history of ink painting is not one straight line either. It includes scholar-painters, court artists, professionals, community workshop painters, and artists working today. It also includes originals, copies, uncertain attributions, and new experiments. Learning to see ink painting means more than saying, “This part is blank, and that part is pale.” It means continuing to ask: Who made this? What materials did they use? How did the object reach us? And how is my own eye traveling through it?
