你可以用家里一只结实、空的金属碗做一个很小的观察:请成人把碗放稳,用木勺轻轻碰两个位置,听声音会不会有差别。普通圆碗不一定产生编钟那样清楚的两个固定音,所以这个活动只能提出问题,不能复制古代乐器。绝不要敲博物馆文物,也不要拿玻璃、瓷器或不明金属来试。

真正的线索藏在钟的形状里。许多先秦乐钟从下方看不是正圆,而像两片瓦合在一起,横截面呈扁圆或透镜形。敲击正面中央和侧面特定位置,会激起不同的主要振动方式,于是耳朵听见两个不同音高。这不是魔法,而是形状、厚度、青铜材料和击点一起作用。

Listen to two short recordings. The first note is lower and the second is higher. Then the teacher reveals the answer: both came from the same bronze bell, struck in different places. How can that be? Shouldn’t one bell have only one “ding”?

You can make a small observation with a sturdy, empty metal mixing bowl at home. Ask an adult to place it securely and tap two spots very gently with a wooden spoon. Do they sound different? An ordinary round bowl may not produce two clear, fixed pitches like an ancient Chinese bell, so this activity raises a question; it does not copy the instrument. Never strike a museum object, and do not experiment with glass, pottery, or unknown metal.

The real clue lies in the bell’s shape. From below, many early Chinese music bells are not circular. Their cross-section is flattened or lens-shaped, like two curved roof tiles meeting. Striking a marked area at the center and another at the side excites different main patterns of vibration, so the ear hears two pitches. It is not magic. Shape, wall thickness, bronze, and striking point work together.

In 1978, archaeologists excavated an early Warring States tomb at Leigudun in Sui County, Hubei - an area now within Suizhou. Water had entered the chambers. As the site was cleared, an L-shaped bronze-and-wood rack and groups of bronze bells came into view. Archaeological records count sixty-five bells, arranged in eight groups on three levels: nineteen knob-hung bells above, forty-five handle-hung bells in the middle and below, and one large bo bell.

Inscriptions naming Marquis Yi of Zeng on many objects identify the tomb’s owner as the ruler of the state of Zeng. “Marquis” was a regional ruler’s title, not the emperor of a unified empire. The burial dates to around 433 BCE, more than 2,400 years ago. Archaeologists reach these conclusions by combining object positions, human remains, writing, and dates - not because a complete biography of the man survived.

The sixty-fifth bell is especially different. Its inscription says that King Hui of Chu, Xiong Zhang, had this ritual bell made for Marquis Yi in the fifty-sixth year of his reign, equivalent to 433 BCE. It helps date the tomb and points to political and ritual ties between Zeng and its powerful neighbor Chu. The words do not give us permission to invent a funeral movie, however. We do not know who carried the bell in or what anyone said at the burial.

How Do Two Notes Hide Inside One Bell?

圆钟受到敲击后,许多方向会以相似方式振动。合瓦形钟打破了这种圆形对称:从正面敲时,一组振动更强;从侧面指定位置敲时,另一组振动更强。曾侯乙编钟上,这两个音通常相隔大三度或小三度 - 你可以把“三度”先理解成一段固定的音高距离,而不是三个完全相同的台阶。

When a round bell is struck, it can vibrate in similar ways around many directions. A lens-shaped bell breaks that circular symmetry. A center strike makes one vibration pattern stronger, while a strike at a chosen side point brings out another. On the Marquis Yi bells, the two pitches are usually separated by a major or minor third. For now, you can think of a “third” as a particular musical distance, not three identical steps.

The sound also needs to fade soon enough. If one tone rings too long, the next can blur into it. The flattened body helps some vibrations die away relatively quickly, making a sequence of clear notes more practical. Large and small bells still differ in volume, tone color, and ringing time. “One bell, two notes” does not mean that every random spot produces a perfect new pitch.

A whole set must work together as well. Craftspeople had to plan size, shape, wall thickness, and bronze alloy, then assemble complex clay molds for casting. Studies also connect marks from work after casting and inner features of the bells with tuning. We cannot know every spoken lesson used in a workshop, but the matched sizes, labeled striking points, and measured pitches show that design, casting, careful listening, and adjustment had to work closely together.

钟体、钟架和挂钩上共有三千七百五十五字铭文,内容包括编号、事件记录、标音和乐律理论。有些字指出同一口钟两个击点的音名;另一些讨论不同诸侯国使用的音名怎样对应。音乐研究者因此能把钟上文字和实际测得的声音互相核对。

可是,这些字不是一首从头到尾告诉乐手“下一拍敲哪口钟”的现代乐谱。它们更像乐器标签、术语对照表、调音知识和政治记录的组合。今天的学者对部分术语和音律结构仍会提出不同解释,所以儿童故事不能把每一种译名写成已经没有争议的答案。

The bells, rack, and hooks carry 3,755 inscribed characters. They include numbers, event records, pitch labels, and music theory. Some name the two striking pitches on one bell; others compare terms used by different regional states. Music researchers can therefore check the written labels against measured sounds.

The writing is not a modern score telling a player, beat by beat, which bell comes next. It is closer to a combination of instrument labels, terminology chart, tuning knowledge, and political record. Scholars still debate parts of the terminology and tuning system, so a children’s story should not turn every proposed translation into a settled answer.

The inscriptions also show musical knowledge crossing borders. Zeng, Chu, and other regions used their own terms and relationships, while the bell texts made comparison possible. This was both sound knowledge and ritual language. Owning a huge, carefully labeled bronze instrument showed visitors the resources, order, and cultural skill of a regional court.

曾侯乙墓中不只有钟,还有编磬、鼓、瑟、笙、排箫和篪等乐器。中室的大型组合被研究者理解为祭祀、宴飨等重大活动所用,另一组较小乐器靠近主棺所在的东室。这样的摆放让我们看见,不同规模的音乐可能服务不同空间与场合。

编钟属于礼乐世界:仪式用音乐安排动作和秩序,宴会音乐接待宾客;一整架青铜钟又把财富、人手和政治等级摆在眼前。但“礼器”不等于“从来没有真正演奏”。固定音高、成套音列、击点标记以及同墓乐器都支持它具有实际演奏功能。它也不是“只给皇帝听”,因为曾侯乙是诸侯国君,贵族宫廷与祭祀宴会同样使用乐钟。

我们却不知道曾侯乙最喜欢哪首曲子,也没有任何战国录音留下来。现代演奏者可以根据乐器性能研究古代音乐,也可以用复制编钟演奏新编乐曲;后者展示了复制品今天能做什么,却不等于还原公元前433年的一场音乐会。

The tomb held more than bells. It also contained stone chimes, drums, se zithers, mouth organs, panpipes, and flutes. Researchers interpret the large group in the central chamber as instruments for major activities such as ancestral rituals and banquets. A smaller group stood in the eastern chamber near the main coffin. Their placement suggests that music of different sizes could serve different spaces and occasions.

The bells belonged to a world of ritual and music. Ceremonial music organized movement and rank; banquet music received guests. A huge bronze rack also displayed wealth, labor, and political status. But “ritual object” does not mean “never actually played.” Fixed pitches, organized tone sets, marked striking points, and accompanying instruments all support real performance. Nor were the bells “only for an emperor.” Marquis Yi was a regional ruler, and aristocratic courts used bells for rituals and feasts.

We do not know Marquis Yi’s favorite piece, and no Warring States recording survives. Modern musicians can use research to explore ancient sound, or they can play newly arranged music on replica bells. The second choice shows what a replica can do today; it does not recreate one exact concert from 433 BCE.

What You Hear Today Is Often a Replica

原件首先是不可替代的文物。反复敲击会带来震动、磨损和意外风险,所以博物馆展演通常使用经过研究制作的复制品。20世纪80年代,湖北省博物馆联合多家研究机构检测原钟的合金、结构、发声和频率,完成成套复制;今天的编钟乐团也明确以复制件演出。

复制不是按一下按钮就“克隆古代声音”。研究者与工匠要决定怎样记录尺寸、复制纹样、选择合金、铸造钟体,再测试两个击点的音高;若结果不对,还要寻找形状、厚度或制作过程中的原因。复制品保护了原件,也把一件不能随便敲的文物变成可以检验声学假设的工具。

现在回到开头的两个音。真正让人惊讶的,不是“古人没有机器却创造了魔法”,而是许多无名制模者、铸工、刻铭者、调音者和乐师,把一次次观察变成了能反复工作的系统。我们隔着两千四百多年听见的,是青铜振动,也是合作留下的证据。

The originals are irreplaceable museum objects first. Repeated striking creates vibration, wear, and risk, so museum performances normally use carefully researched replicas. In the 1980s, the Hubei Provincial Museum worked with several research institutions to study alloy, structure, sound production, and frequency before completing a replica set. The museum’s bell ensemble clearly identifies its performance instruments as replicas.

Replication is not pressing a button to “clone the ancient sound.” Researchers and craftspeople must decide how to record dimensions, reproduce patterns, choose an alloy, cast the bell, and test both striking pitches. If the result is wrong, they look for a cause in shape, thickness, or production. A replica protects the original and turns an object that must not be casually struck into a tool for testing acoustic ideas.

Now return to the two notes at the beginning. The wonder is not that people “had no machines but created magic.” It is that many unnamed mold makers, founders, inscribers, tuners, and musicians turned repeated observation into a system that worked. Across more than 2,400 years, we hear vibrating bronze - and evidence of collaboration.

The Best Answer Opens More Questions

一口钟能发两个音,因为合瓦形钟体允许不同击点激起不同的主要振动方式;而让六十五口钟成为一套乐器,还需要精确铸造、调音、铭文、钟架与演奏者共同配合。

可是答案没有结束侦探工作。古代乐曲究竟怎样编排?不同国家的音名怎样交流?制度和真实演奏有多少距离?编钟留下的不是一句“世界第一”,而是一组还能继续研究的问题。

The answer does not end the investigation. How were ancient pieces arranged? How did states translate one another’s pitch names? How closely did real performance follow ritual rules? The bells leave us more than a slogan about being “the world’s first.” They leave a set of questions that research can keep exploring.
